View from the Old Stamp Mill trailWhen I was a little kid, one of the family trips I remember most was a trip to Mammoth, CA. My Parents were great skiers and so they liked spending time on the slopes at Mammoth Mountain. As for us kids, who were all too little at the time to ski, we always looked forward to sledding down those white fluffy hills.

The memories of sledding down the mountains in Mammoth have never left my thoughts as one of my better moments as a child. There was so much snow, and a lot of movement all over the town, some people sledding, some snowshoeing; and, of course, you look up and there is a huge mountain with people skiing.

The sun would sparkle on the snow, shooting out different colorful rays of warmth. People were laughing, walking along the sidewalks on their way to spend the day in the snow. You could feel great outdoor energy; it was as if they were all dancing on their own personal clouds.

So, my husband (Erik), sister and her family, and another couple we like to spend time with, all decided that we wanted to recreate the same memories for my niece and nephew. And we did.

We went on a really nice hike the first full day there. Hiking trails are all around Mammoth Mountain; Erik just happened to find one that was a little off the beaten path. As he always does.

The Old Stamp Mill

Hiking with the familyIt was trail to the Old Stamp Mill. We found ourselves hiking up this trail, surrounded by different rock formations, high peaks all around us and trees that tucked us in. My niece, who is 5, and my nephew, who is 3, were being towed by my brother-in-law in a sled.  We were building memories for the next generation of our family.

There we were amongst the Pine trees, plowing through snow which was deep and challenging to move through. My niece got off the sled and made the trek on foot for about 25 minutes, which for a 5-year-old is pretty good. It feels so rewarding to see the influence you have on such a young individual. I hope my niece and nephew remember these times and it becomes instilled in them to get outdoors – being active, hiking, and never losing their sense of exploration!
