Food to Keep You Hiking

Not necessarily a recipe, this is a compilation of some of my favorite trail snacks – a subject not to be taken lightly. oranges Snacks are important when hiking. They're sometimes all that keep you going, as in: when I get to that vista point, I'm going to sit down and have my snack.

Everyone is different on this subject. I know people who love Goo products. (I hate them.) Others like cheese sticks. (I like them, but not when they're soft and gooshy like they get in a hot backpack.)

Some go health food store healthy. Some go the candy and chocolate route. Me, I'm in between. I like my protein and have to have a bit of sugar thrown in.

So, here's my list of Hiking Food Favorites

ORANGES: I love oranges on the trail. They're thirst-quenching. Filling. Makes me feel healthy to eat them. And they're very satisfying, especially when followed by a snickers bar.

CHEESE: The best I've found so far are those baby bonbel cheeses. They're clean, wrapped, stay firm on the trail except in extreme heat. And the wrappings are easy to carry out.

CRACKERS: To go with the cheese. A little mustard carried along in a snack ziplock makes a nice addition here, too.

CHEESE SANDWICHES: I have sandwich-sized re-usable containers I carry them in. It protects them and provides me with a place for orange peels. I like pickles on the sandwich, and I carry them in a separate pouch so they don't make the bread all mushy.

THREE MUSKATEERS BAR:  Maybe this is not even fair to add; it just happens to be my favorite candy bar, and I like a candy bar when I'm hiking. I feel I've earned it.

Friends' Hiking Food Favorites

APPLESAUCE: For short hikes, she loves those dixie-cup sized applesauces. (Forgive her please: She swears she never uses such non-green packaging for any other purpose!)

LIFESAVERS: This friend likes to pop the occasional butterscotch lifesaver as she hikes. It doesn't work for me. I choke if I try to eat and walk at the same time.

GRAPES: A little tricky to carry without mashing them, but when successful, this is a nice cherriescombo of liquid and solid. Another friend likes cherries. I don't. They seem too sweet and not thirst-quenching to my taste.
