Ladies Hiking Daypack Checklist |

Keep it light. Keep it light; keep it simple. That’s my theory when stuffing any pack I’m carrying on my back. Daypacks, especially, because I’m usually carrying these along on half-day or all-day hikes. The daypack is on my back the entire time I’m hiking, so I carry only what I really need.
I’ve compiled a checklist of my daypack must-haves, things I never leave home without. Not when I’m hiking anyway! I often have more with me, but never less.

Food to Keep You Hiking Not necessarily a recipe, this is a compilation of some of my favorite trail snacks – a subject not to be taken lightly. Snacks are important when hiking. They're sometimes all that keep you going, as in: when I get to that vista point, I'm going to sit down and have my snack. Everyone is different on this subject. I know people who love Goo products. (I hate them.) Others like cheese sticks. (I like them, but not when they're soft and gooshy like they get in a hot backpack.) Some go health food store healthy. Some go the candy and chocolate route. Me, I'm in between. I like my protein and have to have a bit of sugar thrown in. Read 0 Comments... >> |

The Schell Creek Mountain range on the southeastern side of Ely may not be a nationally known hiking region, but I can tell you that its day will come. It’s a beautiful area and, well, just gorgeously alive.
We (my husband, Erik, and I) hiked a mountain called Kolcheck Basin. We went during the time when the leaves on the Aspens were changing. The Bucks were in rut and the air was a little more chilly then usual. Read 2 Comments... >> |

By April McKeegan-Garcia April McKeegan-Garcia, travel writer and hiker, has pondered the cotton question – to be or not to be in cotton on the trail! - and she shares her amusing and insightful conclusions with Ladies-Hiking. Years ago I sat in a winter survival class stymied by the instructor’s proclamation, “In the wilderness, cotton kills!” I looked down at my clothes and realized in horror I was covered from head to toe in this murderous material. Killer Cotton! How could this soft, plush fiber, a common thread in everything from socks and undies to bedspreads and pillows, get such a raw deal? Here is the cotton-picking truth: Read 8 Comments... >> |

By Judith Harlan Truly a walk in the woods, Muir Woods National Monument park may just turn you into a day-hiker. Ladies Hiking editor Judith Harlan takes you with her on a quiet stroll through the woods. Muir Woods is a grand place to test your hiking legs. In fact, this beautiful park just north of San Francisco has a great “try it; see if you like it” hike for those of you not so sure that hiking is for you.
You enter the woods along a paved, smooth path with wood bridges crossing Redwood Creek. This is the Main Trail Loop, and it's an easy loop that's accessible to all, including strollers and wheelchairs. That's one of the beauties of this loop... Read 2 Comments... >> |
